VERO BEACH, Fla. — A St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office detective has been arrested on a felony driving under the influence charge following an off-duty traffic crash involving an agency-owned vehicle in Vero Beach, Florida.
Detective Tyler August Horstman surrendered to authorities at the Indian River County Jail on Monday, October 26, 2026, after an arrest warrant was issued in connection with the crash earlier this year.
According to the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, blood testing indicated Horstman had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.246, more than three times Florida’s legal driving limit of 0.08.
Horstman faces a felony DUI charge involving serious bodily injury. He was released from custody after posting a $15,000 bond and has been placed on unpaid administrative leave while criminal proceedings continue.
Details of the Vero Beach Traffic Crash
According to information released by the Vero Beach Police Department and subsequent reporting on the arrest investigation, officers responded to a two-vehicle collision at approximately 11:25 p.m. on March 1, 2026, at the intersection of Beachland Boulevard and State Road A1A.
The collision involved a Ford F-150 pickup truck operated by Horstman and a Chevrolet Equinox driven by 20-year-old Mariana Jimenez.
Investigators reported that Horstman was off duty and operating an unmarked vehicle belonging to the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office when the collision occurred.
The crash resulted in significant damage to both vehicles.
According to the police investigation, Horstman was traveling eastbound on Beachland Boulevard at approximately 63 mph in a posted 35-mph speed zone. Investigators determined that Horstman entered the intersection with a green traffic signal.
Police also reported that Jimenez, who was traveling southbound on State Road A1A, entered the intersection against a red traffic signal.
These findings are relevant to the investigation because authorities identified alleged driving violations involving both motorists. Horstman’s criminal charge concerns his alleged impairment and the serious injuries associated with the collision.
The Sheriff’s Office initially described the incident as a March 2 crash, while subsequent Vero Beach Police Department reporting identified the collision as occurring late on March 1.

Woman Suffers Serious Injuries in Collision
According to reporting based on the police investigation and arrest affidavit, Jimenez suffered a traumatic brain injury in the crash.
A one-year-old child traveling in her vehicle was also taken to the hospital for evaluation. Police subsequently reported that the child was not injured.
Horstman and Jimenez were transported to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce for medical treatment.
Vero Beach police investigators examined the crash scene, vehicle data, medical information and other evidence while determining the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Authorities have not established through a final court judgment that Horstman is criminally responsible for the woman’s injuries.
Blood Alcohol Test Reportedly Revealed Level Above Legal Limit
The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office reported that it received notification on September 9, 2026, that Horstman’s blood test results indicated a blood alcohol concentration of 0.246.
Florida’s generally applicable blood alcohol limit for operating a motor vehicle is 0.08.
The reported result was approximately 3.08 times that threshold.
According to the arrest investigation, Horstman acknowledged having consumed beer earlier in the evening. Investigators also documented observations about his physical condition after the collision.
The reported blood alcohol concentration and the investigators’ observations are evidence cited in the criminal investigation. Their admissibility, interpretation and legal significance remain subject to the judicial process.
